While the seller provides a disappointing dearth of photos, this 30′ Etchells Sailboat is a pretty splendid example of a classic racer. This is a 1974 model but was completely restored in 2015 along with the trailer (included). E. W. “Skip” Etchells designed these boats in answer to a competition launched by Yachting Magazine in 1965. The first submission was a wooden model named Shillalah, and she was taken to Kiel, Germany to compete in the trials held there in the fall of 1966. She won 8 of the 10 races, but nevertheless the judges were unable to agree on a winner, and so a second set of trials were held in Travemünde in 1967. The boat Etchells brought this time was a fiberglass version, using Shillalah as a form. As with the first races, Shillalah II dominated – winning then of the thirteen races held.
And thus the Etchells Class was born, and is very much alive and active to this day.
